We invite you to take part in the XVII L.S. Vygotsky International Readings «The age of cultural-historical psychology: from scientific revolution to transformation of social practices: the 120th anniversary of Lev Vygotsky's birthday». The Readings will take place in L.S. Vygotsky Institute of Psychology of the Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow, on November 14-19, 2016.

Although L.S. Vygotsky’s works are almost a century old, they remain relevant to this day. Cultural-historical theory is even becoming more popular nowadays than it was during Vygotsky’s life. Without a doubt we can say that it is not just a theory, but a whole new direction in psychology. Today, L.S. Vygotsky’s ideas live and develop through the studies of second and third generations of his students and disciples. Cultural-historical approach is constantly renewed by fresh ideas and findings, and finds its way to new practices, directions and fields of modern psychological science.

The means of implementation and development are important to any theory. Many great psychological concepts were abandoned and forgotten before they had the chance to be developed and find their way into practice. But this can not be said about cultural-historical approach. Even now, after 120 years from L.S. Vygotsky’s birth, there are still many urgent problems that need to be discussed.

D.B. Elkonin called cultural-historical approach – “non-classical”. He meant by that the fundamentally different methodology of scientific research which was introduced by Vygotsky. It can be said that traditional natural-scientific paradigm of human study has led psychology to a dead end. Cultural-historical theory is based on different methodological principles which are needed to study psychological reality. But how can we develop and use these principles in solving current psychological problems of modern person’s and society's everyday life?

One of the most important L.S. Vygotsky’s works is “Psychology of art”. It shows another way to study human psychic, different to a purely biological approach which reduces human to just another specimen of animal world, different to a purely social approach which greatly constricts the understanding of humans essence, different to other mistaken solutions, like the convergence theory. True humanistic approach have found its incarnation in L.S. Vygotsky’s ideas and principles – historicism, unity of affect and intellect, system and sense structure of consciousness, mediation, higher psychic functions. Also, many of the problems stated by Vygotsky himself - the interconnection between learning and development, communication and generalization, sense and meaning, consciousness and unconscious, natural and cultural in human psychic – still remain urgent and unsolved.

In his methodological study “The historical meaning of the crisis in psychology” L.S. Vygotsky provides an analysis of the crisis in psychological science from the point of view based on creation of the new holistic psychology. More than 100 years have passed since the start of the open crisis in psychology but it can’t be said that this crisis has been solved. Is Vygotsky’s analysis still applicable to the modern state of psychology? And how the future of psychology should look like?
